Candle Care 101: How to Keep Your Candles Burning Brightly and Safely
Ready to elevate your candle game? Whether you're winding down after a long day, setting the mood for a cosy night in, or just making your space smell incredible, we’ve got the ultimate guide to help you enjoy your Palm Beach Collection candles safely and stylishly. Let’s dive in!
Placement Matters
Before you light your candle, find the perfect spot. Make sure it’s on a stable, heat-resistant surface and away from edges. Keep it far from flammable items such as curtains, furniture and bedding, and away from high-traffic areas where it can get knocked over. Make sure your candle is in a dry, well-ventilated spot but avoid drafts, vents, windows, and ceiling fans. Drafts make flames flicker, which can lead to uneven burning and smoke. Safety first, always!
Trim the wick
Before you light your candle, grab your wick trimmer and trim the wick to about 5mm. Keep it to 5mm for a cleaner, safer burn. A short wick means less soot and smoke, a more controlled flame and a longer-lasting candle. Bonus tip: Palm Beach Collection’s Wick Trimmer makes this job a breeze.
Never Leave a Burning Candle Unattended
This one’s a no-brainer. Never, ever leave your candle burning when you’re not around. Going to sleep? Heading out? Blow it out! It’s the easiest way to avoid accidents and keep your space safe.
Burn Time Guidelines and Over burning
For an even burn and to avoid “tunnelling” (where only the centre melts and the sides stay solid), let your candle burn until the wax melts all the way to the edges. This can take 1-3 hours depending on the size of the candle. Three hours max per burn session for our Standard or Deluxe Candles, and 1-2 hours for our Mini Candles keeps the wick in check. Burning your candle for longer than the recommended burn time can cause the wick to get too long and the glass jar to overheat. Burn times and other safety instructions are found on the inside of the box, the dust cover on the candle, and under the candle jar. For more on burn time guidelines be sure to watch our Candle Care Guide.
Extinguish Candles Properly
Blowing out candles can get messy. Use a snuffer or gently blow to avoid splattering hot wax. Our matte black Candle Snuffer adds a touch of class to your candle care routine. And remember, never use water to put out the flame.
Palm Beach Collection candles come in beautiful glass jars that can get hot. Let them cool before you move them, and always handle with care.
Store Candles Properly
Keep your candles in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Cover them with their lids or with our stylish Glass Cloche when not in use to keep out dust and debris. This keeps the fragrance fresh and the wax perfect for your next burn session.
Know When It’s Time for a New Candle
When your candle is down to 10mm of wax, it’s time to say goodbye. Burning it past this point can cause the glass jar to overheat and crack. But don’t get rid of the jar just yet! Not only are our glass candle vessels recyclable, there are many ways in which they can be reused; from using them as vases, holders for utensils or make-up brushes, to containers for all sorts of things.
